This policy ensures that all employees and volunteers are aware of the health risks associated with drug and alcohol misuse, outlines available support, and sets out the consequences for substance misuse in the workplace.

Policy Objectives

Scope

This policy applies to all employees and volunteers and covers the misuse of:

  • Alcohol
  • Illegal drugs
  • Prescription and over-the-counter medicines
  • Any substances that impair work performance or pose safety risks

Substance Use and the Workplace

  • No alcohol is to be consumed 12 hours prior to the start of a work shift.
  • Employees/volunteers must not work under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
  • Employees/volunteers found using drugs or alcohol in the workplace may face disciplinary action.

Health Risks of Substance Misuse

Alcohol

Excessive alcohol consumption can lead to:

  • Anxiety and mental health problems
  • High blood pressure, strokes, and heart disease
  • Liver damage and digestive issues
  • Increased risk of cancer

Responsibilities

Management Responsibilities

Managers are responsible for:

  • Recognising signs of substance misuse.
  • Addressing performance or conduct concerns related to substance misuse.
  • Encouraging employees to seek help and offering appropriate support.

Employee Responsibilities

Employees and volunteers are responsible for:

  • Understanding and complying with this policy.
  • Maintaining a professional and safe work environment.
  • Seeking help if they have concerns about their substance use.

Confidentiality

Sefton Support Group will handle all substance-related concerns confidentially. However, in cases of illegal activity or safety concerns, disclosure to authorities may be necessary.

Help and Support

Employees and volunteers are encouraged to seek help for substance-related concerns. Sefton Support Group will provide a supportive and non-judgmental approach.

Prohibited Activities

  • Employees and volunteers must not possess, store, trade, or sell controlled drugs on Sefton Support Group premises.
  • Employees and volunteers must not bring Sefton Support Group into disrepute by engaging in illegal drug-related activities.
  • Where illegal drug use is suspected, Sefton Support Group reserves the right to report incidents to the police.

Possible Indicators of Substance Misuse

  • Erratic performance
  • Increased irritability or aggression
  • Hand tremors
  • Increased accident risk
  • Overconfidence or inappropriate behavior
  • Sudden mood swings
  • Poor timekeeping and absenteeism
