About the Session

Many families have had an amazing effect on the lives of the people of Liverpool, and few more so than Bishop Francis Chavasse and his family.

This talk will explore the lives of the Chavasse family, including Captain Noel Chavasse, whose bravery and medical service during the First World War made him one of the most decorated figures of the conflict. The session will also touch on his role as a doctor who helped recognise and treat what was then known as Shell Shock, now understood as PTSD.

We will also learn more about other members of this remarkable family, including Noel’s twin brother, who became Bishop of Rochester, and another family member who became an Ophthalmic Surgeon at St Paul’s Hospital on Old Hall Street.
