Each year, as autumn sets in, the iconic red poppy begins to appear on lapels, jackets, and shop counters across the country. More than just a symbol, the poppy represents remembrance, resilience, and the promise of support for those who have served our country. At Sefton Support Group, we’re proud to support the Poppy Appeal and this year, you can pick up your poppy directly from us.

A Brief History of the Poppy Appeal

The tradition of wearing a poppy to honour the fallen began after the First World War. Inspired by the famous war poem “In Flanders Fields” by John McCrae, which described poppies growing amidst the graves of soldiers, the red poppy became a powerful symbol of remembrance.

In 1921, the Royal British Legion adopted the poppy as its emblem, launching the very first Poppy Appeal to raise funds for veterans and their families. Over a century later, the Appeal continues to provide vital support to the Armed Forces community across the UK.

Why Buying a Poppy Matters

When you choose to wear a poppy, you’re doing more than remembering, you’re directly supporting those who have served. Money raised through the Poppy Appeal goes toward:

  • Providing financial assistance to veterans and their families
  • Offering mental health and physical rehabilitation services
  • Supporting bereaved families
  • Campaigning for the rights and welfare of the Armed Forces community

The Royal British Legion relies on the generosity of the public, and every poppy sold helps make a difference in the lives of those who have sacrificed so much.
