Small Steps, Big Benefits: Learning About Accessible Physical Activity with Activity for Me CIC
Our latest Community Wellbeing Session welcomed Peter Faye from Activity for Me CIC, who delivered an engaging, interactive, and thought-provoking session about the importance of keeping active and how physical activity can benefit both our physical and mental wellbeing.
Rather than focusing on intense exercise or fitness goals, Peter encouraged everyone to think differently about movement. Throughout the session, he explained that physical activity doesn’t have to mean running marathons or spending hours in the gym. Instead, small, manageable activities carried out regularly can have a significant positive impact on our health, confidence, and overall wellbeing.
One of the key messages from the morning was that physical activity should be accessible to everyone. Whether it’s a short walk, gentle stretching, gardening, swimming, chair-based exercises, or simply finding opportunities to move more during everyday life, every little bit counts.
Finding Your Own Motivation
Peter encouraged members to think about why they want to stay active. For some people it may be improving their health, while for others it might be spending more time with family, reducing stress, improving mobility, or simply enjoying life.
Rather than comparing ourselves to what we were able to do years ago, Peter reminded everyone that it’s important to focus on what our bodies are capable of today and to adapt activities to suit our own abilities. This positive approach helps people build confidence while continuing to enjoy the benefits of movement.
Throughout the session, members openly shared their own experiences and the activities they enjoy, creating some wonderful conversations about how movement can mean something different for everyone. It reinforced the message that there is no single “right” way to be active – finding something you enjoy is often the key to making it part of everyday life.
More Than Just Physical Health
One of the most interesting parts of the session explored the connection between physical activity and mental wellbeing.
Peter explained how activities such as walking, swimming, yoga, stretching, breathing exercises, and simply spending time outdoors can help reduce stress, improve mood, increase confidence, and provide valuable opportunities to relax and clear the mind.
He also spoke about resilience, explaining that while exercise cannot remove life’s challenges, it can help us feel stronger, think more clearly, and put us in a better position to cope with them. It was a message that resonated with many of our members and led to some thoughtful discussion.
Practical Demonstrations
This wasn’t just a presentation. Peter brought along a variety of simple exercise equipment, including resistance bands, tennis balls, and an exercise ball, giving members the opportunity to see how inexpensive equipment can be used safely at home.
Members were encouraged to join in throughout the session, trying gentle stretching exercises, balance techniques, mobility movements, and practical ways to improve flexibility and strength. Peter demonstrated how everyday household items can also be used to support movement, proving that staying active doesn’t need to be expensive or complicated.
It was fantastic to see everyone getting involved, asking questions, and leaving with practical ideas they could easily incorporate into their daily routines.
Thank You, Peter
We would like to say a huge thank you to Peter Faye from Activity for Me CIC for taking the time to join us and share his knowledge, enthusiasm, and practical advice.
The session reminded us that staying active isn’t about being the fastest or strongest. It’s about finding activities we enjoy, listening to our bodies, and making movement part of everyday life in ways that work for us.
